Music

Iforgot to upload music paper on blog yesterday, but I uploaded on D2L by duedate. It was funny that yesternight I was reminded of uploading the paper on the bog because of dreams. Thus, I do it today.

ARI HERSTAND
On Friday night at 8pm in the Cabin, Ari Seth Herstand gave a performance as the special guest for the 40 years celebration of the Cabin. Even though it was a solo stage, he emerged as a full band, delivering an extraordinary show to his audience. It was fortunate for me to have a chance to attend this live music event. He encouraged dynamism and enthusiasm in the audience and connected them, all of us together enjoying the music. However, I was not impressed by his obsession, soft voice, and band’s structure.
Actually, it was an interesting solo show. When I came, I was stunned by the number of people attending the event. All of the tables in the Cabin were filled by a crowd of his fans, even in the hallway, and while some people were seated, some of them stood up in order to not lose the opportunity to see and cheer their icon. With curly hair and comfortable clothes, Ari Herstand charmingly appeared and performed seven songs (“Last day”, “float by on”, etc.) He played with many different instruments including the acoustic guitar, trumpet, tambourine, piano, and harmonica. Even though the dark room was filled with the smell of popcorn, the audience attentively focused on his performance. They clapped their hands and sang sweet melodies such as “bomp barom bomp bao bumb but ta ra rao rao,” along with him. During the break, he told jokes to make the atmosphere warmer, more pleasant, and friendlier. The audience was really excited, instantaneously responding to the jokes. They pleasantly chatted with him as if they were best friends. Thus, Ari Herstand had a power to connect to the audience.
Currently, Ari Herstand has released two albums: Baby Eyes and Whispering Endearment. The genre in those albums mainly included folk, hip hop, jazz, and acoustic. In terms of lyrics, he wrote about memories and experiences of travels within the United States, and the feelings of love and loss of love that arose from his soul and the bottom of his heart. Genuine and real sensations in the lyrics made the audience move, melting our hearts. His fans were serenely seated and avidly and admiringly gazed at him, even ignoring the surrounding people’s movement. Moreover, he stole many girls’ hearts. A lot of girls waited for him after the show, when they immediately stood in a long line in order to talk face to face with him. They certainly did not forget to shake hands, hug, take pictures and obtain his signature on the posters and his albums. It took me about thirty minutes to wait for him in order to conduct the interview. Overall, those constant and real emotions depicted in the lyrics actively impressed the audience. However, the descriptions of the topics were beyond that. He illustrated a melancholic relationship with his girl friend by using provocative words. Lyrics that Ari Herstand poured out became more sexual, “The pillow loses volume below you/ I move to give it life, the blanket has now fallen all on you/ blanket serve one purpose and I am nervous/ I will never find one that keeps me warm/ I have fooled my brain into thinking blankets change with each new owner they find.” Therefore, he seemed to suffer too much obsession with sex.
Nonetheless, people cannot deny the musical abilities of Ari Herstand. Those abilities started to blossom during his childhood. Throughout the interview, I had a glimpse of part of his amazing childhood. Passion, curiosity, and excitement motivated him to learn different kinds of instruments. He taught himself by listening music of Ingrid Michael, Meiko, and Coldplay, Ari Herstand said. He started to play piano at 3 years old, continued to learn trumpet, and at the age of 14, he picked up guitar. Because of his love of music, he chose to major in music when he entered McNally Smith School in St Paul. Surprisingly, he stopped college after one year and was determined to become a performer.
Even though Ari Herstand was skillful at condensing emotions and interweaving different sounds, he did not possess a strong voice. His voice was so sweet, soft and tender like gyros (well seasoned beef-lamb) that he could not succeed in generating high notes for a long time. It became worse when he sang gently and mildly while the music was so loud, noisy, and powerful. Therefore, it was hard for me to hear his voice.
An especially remarkable aspect that everybody always noticed in his solo stage, which was unique for Ari Herstand, was using the loop pedal. This tool allowed him to intertwine different sounds from different instruments including the acoustic guitar, trumpet, tambourine, harmonica, string sounds and beat boxing, delivering a lively, energetic, and vigorous show. Furthermore, because of this technology, sounds were repeated. Ari Herstand started with one instrument and it kept playing with the support of the loop pedal. Following the example, he did the same thing with another instrument. Different repetitive sounds from different instruments were built on the top of each other. As a result, the audience could enjoy different layers of music, producing inspirational and moving music.
With the advance of technology, the loop pedal helped him convey striking performances. Ari Herstand was not bothered by having to collect other members for the band. Instead, he could complete shows by himself and did not have to share profits with other members. Consequently, if any singer cannot seek musicians who match the music style of the band but still wants to generate more capital, the loop pedal is an effective and secure method.
In conclusion, even though I did not like his obsession, weak voice, and lack of other band members, I still enjoyed the show. He brought not only inspiration, stimulation, and happiness for audience but also interaction between the singer and his fans. We also should praise for his talents and nonstop efforts of tailoring his show on his own. I will definitely come to his show next year. Finally, I hope his live DVD of the performance in St. Olaf University will acquire success.

Ethnology, learning the uinversity

Ethnology
1. I asked 5 people where they prefer to study and what their study habits. The first one, she likes to study in the Asian lounge. She does not mind studying in the place where it is quiet or people are talking. The second one, she likes to study in the library 5th floor. She studies in the completely silent. The third one, she usually studies in her room or in the Davies Center. She also likes silence. The fourth one, he studies in the study lounge with relaxing music. The last one, she studies in the silent room.
2. Two major differences between Spain’s education system and the UWEC education system are the freedom in the class selection, and also there is a soccer team here.
3. XF means unofficial withdraw. It affects you because it is computed as F.
4. Speak with 2 professors. This part is missing because of still waiting for a professor that one of our group members would like to interview.
5. This sculpture means that people from many places in the world can unite, communicate, and interact with each other. Eau Claire is one of the destinations that connect people.
6. Blugold is the embodiment of a certain spirit. Some people said it was a mythical bird that it was embodiment of school spirit. The mascot that a UWEC student created is not adequate. I think it should not be created too abstract (certain spirit but not specify which kind of spirit). In my opinion, it could be books which embody the diligence and curiosity.
7. In conclusion, from this exercise I can draw that Eau Claire campus culture: people are really friendly. I love people here so much. They like to communicate, speak, and talk with people from other countries. They like to discover different cultures, norms, and traditions. I am an international student and I feel very comfortable living here. To students, the important thing is that they have fun, playing, talking with friends, discovering and learning new things. Also, if they study, they will usually study in the silence. To professors, the important things are that students accomplish homework, as well as improve their social life.
I did not know all members of my group’s blog, so I could not disagree or agree with the responses of someone in my group and consensus on what UWEC culture with them.

Olympic Flame

If you are a new student in Eau Claire and still confused about a local place with affordable prices to fill your stomach and you would like to eat authentic and appetizing food, Olympic Flame is truly an ideal destination for you. It is located on 2920 London Road. My friends Shelby, Taylor, Ben and I had a chance to visit Olympic Flame, eating bona fide Greek food. Even though my initial notion of this restaurant had not been nice, I became interested in this restaurant after hearing about the chef’s stories, as well as experiencing the intertwining features of atmosphere and tasty and healthy food.
Since this was the first time I went to Olympic Flame I was really excited to taste Greek food. However, my first impression of this restaurant was not very positive. The restaurant was relatively quite small-only one long table which would have seated ten people and the other tables were for four or two people. In fact, only two tables were filled by clients when we arrived there. Therefore, I felt the pace of this restaurant was less hectic than other restaurants such as Shanghai Bistro or Tokyo restaurant. This atmosphere became more cheerless and gloomy because of the Greek music. It was supposed to be special and extraordinary since this was the first time I listened to it. Nonetheless, due to a slow melody it seemed to be a sad song, making me feel uninspired, tedious, and unenthusiastic. Another factor that also caused me to be disappointed was limited food offered on the menu. It just consisted of Greek food: Gyros sandwich, Gyros dinner, salads, and baklava beside the classical American food of burgers, hotdogs, and fish and chicken sandwiches. This restricted me to choices of Greek food. As a result of the small place, sad music, and limited number of dishes, my expectations of the restaurant gradually were diminished.
However, chatting with the chef generated back a lot of pleasure and excitement for me. He welcomed me with open and friendly conversation. He expressed to me the secret of how to make gyros stand out. They included their spices and the cooking method. For spices, he expressed that they are garlic and oregano sauces. Also, to demonstrate the cooking method, he used cool and nice gestures about how to cook gyros. It was a great experience to observe a live cooking performance. Our amiable and genial talk was finally continued by the chef’s stories about establishing his restaurant. The story was launched by the desire of a young man strive to seek fortune for himself in a new land. He went overseas to America and began working in a restaurant in Madison where his foundation of cooking was formed. This helped him gain valuable experience in cooking procedures. Therefore, he ventured to open a restaurant himself though there were a lot of intricate tasks and impediment ahead of him. He chose the location in Water Street. Since this area was small his restaurant was moved to London Street, which people have now known and noticed. He also started hiring employees and one of them was his daughter. She was like a representative of the family who could give support as well as cheer- fully helping her father with his nonstop efforts. Although duties were still endless, he continued to search for businesses that provided meat for gyros. This job was both complicated but also crucial because it affected the notoriety achievement. With a lot of effort, he found the company in Chicago that supplies gyros without a delivery payment. It was a good deal and news for his business. Overall, the more we conversed with each other, the more I was interested and admired him for his life story.
Furthermore, I was engrossed by a warm, nice, and dainty atmosphere that Olympic Flame embraced. Even though the room was quite small with sad music, but you would feel comfortable, cozy, and relaxed here because of enthusiastic and sincere wait-staffs. By decorating with yellow, flower- shaped lights and artificial plants, Olympic Flame created peaceful, calm, serene, and natural feelings for me. It is especially suitable for a couple or family who loves nature, does not like to be bothered by others, and enjoys a family or couple atmosphere.
Not only the atmosphere, but also the food, gyros, was authentic. Since I did not have many choices and much experience in choosing food here, I asked a waitress about the menu, posing the question about which food stood out there. With no doubt, she responded to me that it was the gyros. Because I could only eat small portion, she recommended me to opt for the gyros sandwich. Gyros sandwiches are one kind of Greek sandwich which are made of well seasoned beef-lamb, tomatoes, onions in a cucumber and garlic sauce, wrapped in warmed grilled pita bread. With a blend of contrasting colors (black, white, and red) the gyros sandwich seemed to be more scrumptious and tasty. Moreover, this sandwich was a product of unique and special combination: hot-served, flavorsome beef and lamb, a palatable sauce, a strong taste of white onion, and cool veggies.
As I experienced each ingredient, I felt the texture. The meat was soft and tender, veggie was fresh; a sauce was cool and watery, melting in my mouth which was compared to the feeling of taking a shower from a waterfall. Besides the feeling of the food in my mouth, my other sense, my eyes, were somewhat affected. Because of a strong taste of raw onions, my eyes were watery. This gave me new memories of crying while enjoying the appetizing Greek food. On top of the atmosphere, feelings, food combination, and texture was another feature of gyros, which gave me unforgettable memories-nutritional value. Most of the ingredients were fresh and diverse. They retained natural flavors of beef, lamb, garlic, onion, and tomatoes, which provided carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and protein necessary for a healthy body. Therefore, gyros sandwiches are nutritious and wholesome food for your body.
In conclusion, Olympic Flame is a good place for everybody to eat. Despite of not good impression at first glance, the restaurant will give you beautiful memories: interesting stories from the chef; a warm, friendly, and tranquil ambiance; and healthy and flavorful food with low prices ($5-$12). Personally, I like the restaurant and I will come here often when I have free time. Thus, I highly recommend this place for students who really love authentic food at a low cost.
